Did Lee Marvin have it right?

Not you again Grandpa !

So did Lee have it right?

No I really don’t think so.

“Home is made for coming from, for dreams of going to,
which with any luck will never come true ,” he sang in that unmistakable style of his.

Words that made an impact on me at the time.

He was a better singer than me though. No really!

Home to me has always been a place to get back to, irrespective of whether I was returning from a business trip, from a spell away when I was in the Air Force, or at the end of a day at work in the early days of marriage when I used to cycle to and from the office and five nights a week, work in a filling station after my office job and then cycle home. Oh the energy of youth!

I have always been a winter person so I suppose that is why the warmth of a coal fire and the smell of cooking that greeted me seemingly at every stage of my life brings back the most comforting memories.

I was quite taken by Sarah Cook’s video http://tiny.cc/6j2bl on the family mealtime spent together and that has always been important to me too and as time progressed and I managed to get home most evenings at a sensible time without having filled the tanks, checked the oil and tyres of innumerable cars, and we would sit round the table, my wife and eventually three children and share the news of our days.

Now I visit my children and grandchildren in their own homes and find a warmth and welcome second to none and my wife and I sit in their homes around their tables and it is a source of joy to me to find them following the same ritual of togetherness.

Of being at home.

Sorry Lee!

The family mealtime for our home is one of the most important traditions we share. It is a time of reflection, of thanksgiving, of sharing hearts. Even on difficult days, it is a time of truce, of peace making, and often in our frustration, of laughter as we do not allow anything but kind words or compliments. At times the compliments have been something like ” my dear kind brother, your ability to be beyond irritating is quite superior” to which the family laughs as the other brother tries not to crack a smile. Anger over, problem begins beging resolved. Life is blessed at the family dinner table!
    Thank you!
