By your thoughts you are daily, even hourly, building your life;
you are carving your destiny.
Ruth Barrick Golden
Defining self-care is easy because it is broadly the opposite of self-sabotage or self-control. To successfully achieve self-care, you must develop a self-care plan. It is through a structured plan that you will better be able to properly care for your very being. Self-care is not just about brushing your teeth or combing your hair. Self-care is about the needs within you as well. Self-care is caring for your soul, your inner self, and your very being.
How to build a Self-Care Plan
A good self-care plan will remind you and help keep you focused on what want to accomplish. After all, you have values, goals, and a purpose in your life. This plan reminds you about what you need to do to take care of you, as you take care of everything and everyone else. Using a day planner or making notes to yourself can remind you of your goals and the things you need to do to take care of your body, mind, and soul. Your self-care plan will provide you with a solid foundation for what you want to do and how you plan to accomplish it.
Quotes and Affirmations
You should provide yourself with inspirational quotes and affirmations. This is the spiritual food that will help keep you focused on your own personal well being. Not only do you have the reminders of what to do, but you also have little pieces of inspiration around you to remind you of why you are doing it! And when you can keep hold of your “why,” it is easier to get back on track and continue to make progress.
In addition to inspirational quotes, you can hang motivational pictures throughout your home and office. These pictures may be of exotic places you think you would like to visit one day, or tranquil images of nature. These pictures may be of something that you want to attract into your life, or they may remind you of a positive memory from your past. You can also have photos of your family to remind you of what is important to you.
Your self-care plan should inspire you and help remind you of why you want to take care of your body, mind, and spirit.
Record your progress
Another aspect of your self-care plan is tracking your progress. For instance, let us say you have a difficult time getting (and staying) motivated to exercise. By keeping a log of your exercise time, you can keep yourself focused on your final goal, a healthier you.
A food journal is also a good way to keep track of your food choices so that you can remind yourself that you need to eat healthier foods. In addition, you can use your journaling time to record your mental and emotional health. Write down what is really going on inside of you so that you can evaluate your feelings and make proactive choices to take care of your mental health.
Your self-care plan tracks your progress to help you stay on track toward your goals.
You can use all of these aspects of planning for any goal in your life so that you have a solid foundation to take care of yourself. Just be certain that you take care of your inside as well as your outside.
How to create a Personalized Self-Care Plan
You may need to motivate yourself to set up your self-care plan. For some people, beginning any new task may seem like a daunting task. Additionally, you will want to be sure that you can find motivation along the way to help keep you on track.
Ask yourself about what has provided you with motivation in the past. Use this as your beginning motivation to move yourself toward the things you need to start doing to take care of yourself.
A family member, friend, or spouse who will hold you accountable may be a good motivator to help keep you on track. If you slip up in your efforts to pro-actively take care of yourself, they can be there to remind you so that you can renew your focus and get back on course.
It is absolutely important to have some serious sort of structure in place to be successful with your self-care plan. You need to take care of yourself well before you can take care of anyone (or everyone) else. A good self-care plan will provide you with the vigor, attitude, and energy to enjoy your life to its fullest!
